Discover a More Thoughtful Approach to Skin Renewal

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment designed to help skin look smoother, more refined, and refreshed over time.

During treatment, the SkinPen creates thousands of tiny, controlled microchannels in the skin. These microchannels encourage the skin’s natural renewal process, which may gradually improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven texture.

Unlike radiofrequency microneedling, traditional SkinPen microneedling does not use heat or radiofrequency energy. This allows the treatment to work through a controlled mechanical process while your skin begins its natural repair response.

Every patient’s skin is different. Your treatment depth, recommended number of sessions, and whether PRP may be beneficial will depend on your concerns, skin type, and goals. We will evaluate your skin and create a personalized treatment plan before moving forward.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

1. Personalized Consultation

Treatment begins with a conversation about your primary concerns, previous treatments, medical history, medications, skin sensitivity, pigmentation history, and desired outcome. The consultation also helps identify conditions that could increase the risk of irritation, infection, delayed healing, scarring, or pigment changes.

2. Skin Preparation

The treatment area is cleansed and prepared. A topical numbing medication may be used to help reduce discomfort, depending on the treatment area and plan.

3. Microneedling Treatment

The SkinPen is passed across the selected treatment area using settings chosen for your skin and treatment goals. Patients commonly describe pressure, vibration, scratching, or warmth. Sensation can vary between treatment areas and from person to person. When PRP is included, a small blood sample is collected and processed separately. Your provider will explain how PRP will be incorporated into your specific treatment before the procedure begins.

4. Post-Treatment Care

Your skin may look red or feel warm, dry, tight, or sensitive following treatment. You will receive instructions concerning cleansing, skincare products, sun exposure, exercise, makeup, and other activities during the initial recovery period. Following these instructions is important because the skin barrier may be temporarily more sensitive after microneedling.

Two Personalized Microneedling Options

PRP therapy may be considered for a variety of regenerative and wellness concerns. Depending on your needs and Dr. El-Baghdadi’s recommendations, PRP may be discussed for:

Why Modern Pain Management Uses SkinPen

Not every microneedling pen has been reviewed or legally authorized by the FDA for the same purposes. Modern Pain Management uses SkinPen Precision, a prescription-only, FDA-cleared microneedling system.

The SkinPen system includes:

A new sterile cartridge should be used for every patient and every treatment session. Needle cartridges should never be cleaned, reused, or shared.

Is Microneedling Right for You?

Microneedling may be a good option for adults who want to improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, neck wrinkles, uneven texture, or skin that looks dull or less refined.

Microneedling is commonly used for depressed acne scars that remain after active acne has improved. By encouraging the skin’s natural remodeling process, treatment may gradually soften the appearance of certain scars and create a smoother-looking surface.

Because acne scars vary in depth and shape, some respond better than others. Deeper or more complex scarring may require a series of treatments or a combination approach. During your consultation, we will evaluate your skin and discuss what level of improvement may be realistic.

SkinPen is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of neck wrinkles in Fitzpatrick skin types II through IV.

Because the skin on the neck can be thinner and more sensitive than facial skin, treatment settings should be selected carefully. Your provider will consider your skin type, degree of wrinkling, medical history, and previous treatments before recommending a plan.

Microneedling may be considered for skin that appears rough, crepey, uneven, or less refined than it once did. It may also help soften the appearance of fine lines and support a smoother overall texture.

Not every concern requires the same treatment approach. Your consultation will help determine whether traditional microneedling, microneedling with PRP, or another option is best suited to your goals.

Some patients are not looking to dramatically change their appearance. They simply want their skin to look healthier, smoother, and more refreshed.

Microneedling may be incorporated into a personalized skin rejuvenation plan for patients who prefer a gradual, nonsurgical approach. Results develop over time and depend on your skin, the concern being treated, the number of sessions completed, and how your skin responds.

Who May Be a Candidate for Microneedling

Why Choose Modern Pain Management for PRP?

Microneedling may be widely available, but it is still a procedure that intentionally penetrates the skin. The device, treatment plan, infection-control practices, provider training, patient selection, and aftercare all matter.

Modern Pain Management offers microneedling in a physician-guided medical practice led by Dr. Mariam El-Baghdadi. She brings more than 15 years of medical and procedural experience, detailed knowledge of anatomy, and a patient-first approach centered on education and individualized care.

Rather than placing every patient into the same treatment package, we take time to evaluate your concerns, explain the available options, and discuss what treatment may or may not reasonably accomplish.

Microneedling Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. “Vampire facial” is a popular name often used to describe a facial treatment that combines microneedling with platelet-rich plasma, or PRP.

At Modern Pain Management & Regenerative Institute, we refer to this treatment as microneedling with PRP or a PRP facial. During the treatment, PRP is prepared from a small sample of your own blood and incorporated into a personalized skin rejuvenation plan.

While the name may sound dramatic, the goal is simple: to support your skin’s natural renewal process and improve the appearance of texture, fine lines, acne scars, and overall skin quality. Your provider will explain each step of the treatment and determine whether PRP is appropriate for your skin and goals.

There is no universal number of treatments. Some patients may be treated with a series spaced several weeks apart, while others may need a different plan.

The recommendation will depend on your concern, skin response, treatment area, previous procedures, and expectations.

Microneedling results are generally gradual rather than immediate. The skin’s repair and remodeling process continues after the surface has recovered, so changes may become more noticeable over the following weeks and months.

A series of treatments may be recommended. The appropriate number and spacing depend on the concern being treated, your response to treatment, and the treatment plan developed during your consultation.

SkinPen’s clinical studies used a series of treatments rather than relying on a single session. Results varied among participants, and some participants experienced limited or no measurable change.

SkinPen is FDA-cleared as a Class II medical device. “FDA-cleared” is the correct terminology.

SkinPen is cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults age 22 and older across all Fitzpatrick skin types. It is also cleared for wrinkles on the neck in Fitzpatrick skin types II through IV.

SkinPen’s facial acne scar indication includes adults with all Fitzpatrick skin types. However, this does not mean every procedure, treatment area, or skin concern has been studied across every skin tone.

Patients with a history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or other pigment changes should discuss those concerns during their consultation.

Recovery varies according to treatment depth, skin sensitivity, and whether PRP is incorporated.

In SkinPen clinical studies, common responses included redness, dryness, itching, burning, tenderness, peeling, and sensitivity. Many reactions lasted approximately one to three days, although tenderness or peeling could continue for several days in some patients.

Microneedling should not be marketed as having “no downtime.” Some patients return to normal activities quickly, but visible redness, sensitivity, flaking, or dryness can occur.

Microneedling is generally used to address acne scars after active inflammatory acne has been brought under control. It should not be performed directly over infected, open, or significantly irritated skin.

Active acne, recent isotretinoin use, and other skin conditions should be discussed during your consultation.

A topical numbing medication may be applied before treatment. Patients may still experience pressure, vibration, scratching, warmth, or temporary discomfort. Sensation varies depending on treatment depth, area, and individual sensitivity.

No responsible provider should promise that a single session will eliminate acne scars. Acne scars vary considerably, and some may require multiple treatments or a combination of approaches.

Microneedling is intended to improve appearance, not guarantee complete removal.

Yes. Temporary darkening or lightening of the skin can occur after microneedling. The risk may be influenced by skin type, sun exposure, treatment settings, inflammation, and aftercare.

Careful patient selection and diligent sun protection are important.

Traditional SkinPen Microneedling

Traditional microneedling at Modern Pain Management is performed using SkinPen Precision, a prescription microneedling system from Crown Aesthetics.

SkinPen is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults age 22 and older across all Fitzpatrick skin types. It is also FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of neck wrinkles in Fitzpatrick skin types II through IV.

Traditional microneedling may be considered for patients seeking gradual improvement in the appearance of concerns such as:

  • Facial acne scars
  • Neck wrinkles
  • Uneven or rough-looking texture
  • Fine lines
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Dull or tired-looking skin
  • Overall skin quality

Not every concern listed represents a specific FDA-cleared indication for SkinPen. Your consultation will help determine whether microneedling is appropriate for the area and concern you would like to address.

Microneedling with PRP

Microneedling may also be paired with platelet-rich plasma as part of a personalized PRP facial treatment.

PRP is prepared from a small sample of your own blood. The sample is processed to separate and concentrate a platelet-rich portion containing platelets and signaling proteins involved in the body’s natural repair response.
